The ancient city of Salona, known as Colonia Martia Iulia Salonae, became the capital of the Roman Empire on the eastern side of the Adriatic Sea, primarily due to its support for Caesar in the civil war against Pompey. Caesar himself even stayed in Salona during one winter. The Roman Empire’s expansion into this region began around 2 BC, marking the start of a long war with the Delmatians, an Illyrian tribe in central Dalmatia. With the assistance of Liburnus, Octavian emerged victorious against Marcus Aurelius in the renowned Battle of Actium, subsequently becoming the new emperor of the province of Augustus. Salona experienced significant growth as a planned Roman city, expanding east and west.
