The historical city of Zadar has a long tradition as an urban Roman town. It is located on the northern coastline of the Dalmatia region. The old town peninsula, originally called “Iader,” was designed in the shape of a perfect square according to Roman architectural doctrine. It features various religious structures, such as temples, statues, columns, the Capitolij, and a forum where people of Rome would gather. Over time, as rulers changed, the city experienced influences from different cultures, resulting in additional fortifications for defense against invaders. The city walls, built during the Venetian rule, are now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2017.
